A sustainable future for the port of Taranto

Consolidate the present to continue to be a protagonist by improving its positioning through investments, new visions and innovative projects.

The Port of Taranto projects itself towards a future characterized by sustainability and innovation, following the guidelines of The Institution’s Three-Year Operational Plan 2023-2025.

The strategy of the Ionian Sea Port System Authority (AdSPMI) led by Sergio Prete aims at a cutting-edge energy and environmental transition, with a concrete commitment towards the reduction of emissions and the adoption of green technologies, overcoming the critical issues linked to the steel and logistics crisis. The key projects of the Port of Taranto travel in the name of renewable energy, aiming at the diversification of port activities but also at the consolidation of cruise traffic and new synergies with the City and stakeholders.

Among the initiatives put in place, there is the candidacy of the Port of Taranto for the establishment of the shipyard dedicated to the construction of floaters for off-shore wind powerwith which the Authority, together with the AdSP of the Southern Adriatic Sea, has nominated Taranto as an energy hub in the Mediterranean, promoting the development of offshore wind technology in the Ionian port, already present with the large Vestas Blades Italia srl plant.

The recent concession granted to the same Vestasfor the management of the logistics platform, also strengthens the role of the port in industrial and logistics innovation. In fact, in Taranto, the largest wind turbine in the world, the V236, is being produced, which will be shipped by sea to international sites, demonstrating the centrality of Taranto in the production and logistics of renewables.

At the same time, the offshore wind farm Beleolicoalready operational, represents a concrete example of sustainable energy production directly connected to the port.

Among the further green projects there are the interventions planned within the PNRR for the electrification (OPS) of three quays of the port of Taranto, including the public ones of the port, with the aim of intercepting, among other things, the growing demand from the cruise segment regarding the use of green docks.

Still in the field of energy transition, the port of Taranto has been identified as a strategic hub for green hydrogen, thanks to the Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project which will see the construction of a large-scale hydrogen production plant. Furthermore, AdSP is among the partners of Energie Salentine Srl as part of an IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) project which aims to install a plant in the port area for the production of green hydrogen powered by energy produced with renewable and generated by the water electrolysis process with an electrical absorption power of 400 MW.

The green transition is accompanied by innovation, as in the case of WILL DOthe first Italian accelerator born in Taranto and dedicated to startups in the blue economy sector. Innovation is also technological development which the Authority is implementing with the adoption of 5G and the launch of an integrated environmental monitoring system to evaluate the impact of port activities on all environmental matrices of interest: sea water and underground water, air, noise, soil, sediments, flora and fauna, filter-feeding organisms, benthos.

These tools not only speed up the authorization process, but promote the creation of a intelligent and responsible port ecosystem.

With President Prete’s mandate – now nearing its end – the balance is clear: the strategic vision has transformed Taranto into a model of an open, multifunctional and sustainable port, whose attractiveness has also increased thanks to the incentives of the SEZ and the Customs Free Zone . The Ionian port, with the support of local and international communities, tends to consolidate its role as an intermodal hub of the Mediterraneanpreparing for increasingly green challenges and opportunities and in line with the sustainable development goals at EU and global level.
