The rematch between between Oleksandr Usyk e Tyson Fury has one more reason to make history. And to open the doors to a sensational revolution in the world of boxing. As announced by Sheikh Turki Alalshikh, president of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, for the first time there will be the support of artificial intelligence in judging the match. This time the mechanism will not be taken into consideration for the purposes of the verdict, but only the opinion of the three judges will count. However, to all intents and purposes, it will be an interesting experiment that could find space in the future.
Boxing and artificial intelligence
The mechanism will obviously be free of human errors, but as an experiment it will not count in the verdict sanctioned by the three judges. It will just be a case to study. How will it work? After each round the data will be processed, with relative feedback. What will be interesting to understand, also from a future perspective, is how far the judges’ opinion will possibly be from that of the machine. And, above all, why. Remaining in Usyk-Fury, in May the Ukrainian won for split decisionbecoming the undisputed king of the Heavyweights for the first time since 1999 (back then, it was Lennox Lewis’s turn). The rematch at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh will tell if the Ukrainian is the actual number one in the world.
