Red Bull’s Choice: Why Lawson?
After a disappointing season for Sergio Perez, which culminated in him losing second place in the constructors’ championship, Red Bull has decided to focus on the emerging talent of Lawson. The New Zealander proved he lived up to expectations during his 11 races in Formula 1between 2023 and 2024.
In 2023, Lawson made his debut at the Dutch Grand Prix, replacing an injured Daniel Ricciardo. During the last six races of 2024, the youngster made his mark by scoring points in the United States and Brazil, showing uncommon determination and maturity.
“Becoming an official driver for Oracle Red Bull Racing is a lifelong dream, something I have worked towards since I was eight years old,” Lawson said.
The Words of Christian Horner
The Red Bull team principal, Christian Hornerexplained the decision to promote Lawson:
“His performances demonstrate that he is a true driver, capable of challenging the best and achieving excellent results.”
Horner highlighted how Lawson represents Red Bull’s tradition of promoting talent from their junior programme, following in the footsteps of champions such as Sebastian Vettel and the same Max Verstappen.
A Future Full of Challenges
Supporting Verstappen will not be easy. As Horner admitted, racing alongside one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history is a Herculean challenge. However, Red Bull firmly believes that Lawson can exceed expectations and achieve great results in the 2025 season.
Disappointment for Yuki Tsunoda
Lawson’s promotion vacated Yuki Tsunoda disappointed. The Japanese driver, convinced he deserved the position, said he had received very positive feedback from Red Bull after the Abu Dhabi tests. Despite this, Tsunoda will remain with the Red Bull satellite team for another season, probably alongside the promising Frenchman Isack Hadjarvice-champion of Formula 2.
“I committed to improving my technical feedback and my behavior in the team, but evidently it wasn’t enough,” Tsunoda commented regretfully.
A New Chapter for Red Bull
With this move, Red Bull confirms its desire to focus on young talents to continue to dominate the Formula 1 scene. It will be interesting to see how Lawson will behave on the track alongside a champion like Verstappen and whether he will be able to do better than his predecessors like Perez, Gasly and Albon.
