“Making it sound serious is silly”

The director and head of the new DC reiterated that the superhero nature of Superman comics nullifies any attempt to seem excessively serious and reveals what the tone of the film arriving in July 2025 will be.

Underpants or no underpants? This is the dilemma James Gunn faced when making decisions on the his Superman costume. At first, the director had decided to abolish the traditional red underpants worn by the Man of Steel to avoid ridicule, but it would be the new protagonist of the film who asked him to reinstate them, David Corenswet.

During the press event to introduce the first trailer of the film, which will be launched tomorrow 19 December at 3pm, Gunn revealed: “I wanted to remove the underwear from the costume for a long time. But David made me understand that I had to keep them”.

The director continues: “We were trying all these different versions and we did tests with underwear and without. One of the things David said was that Superman wants children not to be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He has these incredible powers. It shoots beams from its eyes… It’s incredibly powerful and could be considered scary. He wants people to like him. It wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses _like a wrestler professional. He dresses in a way that makes people not afraid of him, that shows that hope and that positivity. And that really struck me”_.

What will the tone of the new Superman be?

Naturally, James Gunn’s choice will fuel discussions among fans of one of the most iconic comics of all time and the director is aware of this enough to reply:

“I think trying to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have any frivolity behind it, trying to make it seem serious, is silly because he’s a superhero. He’s a first, he’s colorful and that’s what he is.”

While some may find the costume silly, the director is keen to make it clear that his Superman it won’t have a comedic tone of his previous forays into the genre, as in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy.

“It’s funny, but it’s certainly not as comical as Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy”he explained. “There’s a lot of humor. People like Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, are so funny and David is very funny too, so the humor will be there, but I’m trying to create something that’s grounded despite that incredibly imaginative world. It’s fantasy, it takes inspiration from products like Game of Thrones, it’s a universe in which superheroes really exist. There’s a magic there that’s undeniable.”.
