The case, dubbed “the wiretapping affair”, broke out in 2014, almost by chance. The investigators had monitored Sarkozy’s phone as part of the investigation into the suspected financing coming from Gaddafi’s Libya for the presidential campaign won in 2007. During the recordings, however, it was discovered that Thierry Herzoglawyer of the former president, he had another line in the name of Paul Bismuth, opened precisely to avoid checks. This emerged from the exchanges between Sarkozy and his lawyer a “corruption pact” made with the magistrate Gilbert Azibertwhich was supposed to provide information on the ongoing trials involving Sarkozy in exchange for a place in Monaco. Herzog and Azibert were given the same sentences as Sarkozy.

But the list of the former president’s legal troubles is long. An appearance at the Court is scheduled for January 6 for the alleged Libyan financing. Also over the course of next year, the Supreme Court will have to rule on the appeal presented against the one-year prison sentence, six of which on probation, for the excessive expenses of the 2012 presidential election campaign.
