The Israeli army announced on Monday that warning sirens had sounded in the center of the country, after a missile launch from Yemen, which was intercepted before entering Israeli territory.

“Following warning sirens activated in central Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted before entering Israeli territory. The warning sirens concerning missile and rocket fire were triggered for fear of falling debris following the interception,” states an army press release.

Yemen’s Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group, later claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had “carried out a military operation targeting a military objective of the Israeli enemy in the occupied area of ​​Yaffa”, the Arabic name for Jaffa, a neighborhood in Tel Aviv, saying that “the operation had successfully achieved its objectives.”

The Houthis have already launched several attacks against Israel, claiming to act in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where a war has pitted Israel against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas since October 7, 2023.

Last July, a drone attack on Tel Aviv carried out by Houthi rebels killed an Israeli civilian, provoking Israeli retaliatory strikes against the Yemeni port of Hodeida.

The insurgents, who control large parts of Yemen, also regularly attack ships linked according to them to Israel, the United States or the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and in the Gulf of Aden, despite strikes carried out by the American army, sometimes with the help of the British army.

On Monday, American strikes were also carried out against a Houthi base used to coordinate attacks by Yemeni rebels, in particular against American merchant ships and military vessels, announced the American Central Command for the Middle East in a press release.
