Like every year, the CAF Awards have generated their share of controversies. Monday in Marrakech, this event notably designated Ademola Lookman African Player of the Year 2024, more commonly known as the African Ballon d’Or.
While an entire country hoped to see Achraf Hakimi crowned at home to succeed Mustapha Hadji, the only Moroccan awarded in 1998, the disappointment necessarily lived up to the expectations raised. If the right side of Paris Saint-Germainwho was accompanied to the ceremony by his mother, his brother and President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, did not speak publicly about this disappointment, other members of the Moroccan selection did so for him.
Starting with Soufiane Rahimi. Teammate of the Parisian, notably on the occasion of the bronze medal won at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Al-Aïn striker, who was one of the 10 nominated from the extended list for the African Ballon d’Or, made a very evocative post by publishing a photo showing him with Hakimi, as well as medal and heart emojis.
Walid Regragui’s deputy does not understand
The assistant coach of Lions of the AtlasRachid Benmahmoud, was even more explicit since he published a photo showing him with Hakimi, as well as a medal emoji and another showing a man raising his arms to express his incomprehension.
The Puskas Prize to console Benzia?
But it is not only in Morocco that the verdict of CAF Awards makes waves. On the Algerian side, Yassine Benzia, author of a superb bicycle, has difficulty digesting seeing the Angolan Mabululu having been preferred by the votes of the fans for the title of goal of the year.
Visibly disappointed, the Qarabag striker responded by commenting on the CAF post with “dying laughing” emojis and an ironic thumbs-up. Fennec hopes to have more chances this Tuesday during the FIFA The Best ceremony, which will notably reward the Prix Puskasfor which his goal is in contention.
A “Fucking Disgrace” for Karim Konaté
On the side of the Ivory Coastwho has “only” won two awards (national team of the year and coach of the year for Emerse Faé) despite his CAN coronation, it is the title of Young Player of the Year which does not pass. Indeed, the Senegalese champion Lamine Camara was preferred to the two African champions Oumar Diakité and Karim Konaté. Top scorer in the last Austrian championship, the Salzburg striker was recently in the running for the Raymond Kopa prize. France Footballwhich rewards the best young person. An honor that Camara did not have.
“It’s a f*cking shame“, Konaté reacted on his networks by posting a photo of his famous compatriot Didier Drogba pronouncing this famous sentence after the semi-final return of the Champions League in 2009 against the FC Barcelona. Like every year, the CAF Awards will have left more people frustrated than happy…
