a senior officer killed in an explosion in Moscow – La Nouvelle Tribune

A fatal explosion occurred Tuesday in Moscowcosting the life of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillovhead of the Russian nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) defense forces, as well as his assistant. The incident took place as the general was leaving a residential building, the explosion coming from a device hidden in a scooter.

This death occurs in a particularly tense context, marked by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict which has raged on Ukrainian soil for more than two years and which has cost the lives of tens of thousands of people. The timing of this event is all the more significant as Kirillov had recently been the subject of serious accusations regarding his role in this conflict.

A Russian officer, to say the least, controversial

The general Kirillov was a controversial figure on the international scene. In October, the United Kingdom placed him under sanctions, accusing him of having supervised the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine and to have played a major role in the propagation of disinformation of the Kremlin. The day before his death, the Ukrainian secret services (SBU) had indicted him in absentia for the use of such weapons.

The Russian Investigative Committee, the country’s main investigative authority, immediately opened a criminal investigation into this double homicide. Forensic experts and operational teams were deployed to the scene to establish the exact circumstances of the incident. More information is expected in the coming days.

Gray areas persist

Many questions remain unanswered concerning this death, in particular its origin as well as its sponsors. Some voices speak of the use of a booby-trapped scooter to carry out this attack. A case which adds to a series of incidents which have affected high-ranking Russian personalities since the start of this conflict.
