In its complete price survey carried out in November, INSEE highlights significant declines compared to last year for several categories of products having their place under the tree.
Is this an effect of the increase in their purchasing power (+1.8% in 2024) or the desire not to penalize their children and loved ones? For end-of-year gifts, the trend in France is not to tighten belts. According to polls carried out in recent weeks, the French as a whole not only plan to preserve this budget, but even aim to revise it slightly upwards.
The average calculated by Havas Market, based on a survey conducted each year by YouGov, increases from 245.50 euros at the end of 2023 to 261.40 euros this year. With, what’s more, a major difference compared to 2023: this year, we will be able to please by offering products whose price is lower than a year ago. This is particularly clear for high-tech products.
TV, smartphones and PCs have seen their prices drop significantly
According to the latest complete price survey carried out each month by INSEE, televisions, of equal quality, cost 6.1% less. Gifts much more often present under the tree, smartphones have also seen their prices drop (-5.6% over one year). The drop is also significant in the PC department (-3.7%).
If you were thinking of offering an espresso machine, now is also the right time since their price has fallen significantly (-4.9%). The same goes for this gift, only possible for a young person leaving the family home: the vacuum cleaner, which INSEE places among the products in the “household appliances” section whose prices have fallen the most (-4% over one year).
For those who do not have a budget allowing them to offer such expensive gifts, other departments offer better deals than last year. CDs and vinyls, which remain popular with seniors, display clearly lower prices (-4.8%).
Jewelry and chocolates to avoid if you’re looking to pay less than last year
As well as in the childcare section, baby items (-3.6%). INSEE also notes slightly lower prices on camping items (-1.6%), hair dryers, hair straighteners, epilators, clippers and other household appliances dedicated to body care (-1.4%). .
On the other hand, there are two categories of products to avoid, at least if your goal is not to spend more than a year ago: chocolates (+9.7%) and jewelry (+6.4% ). In both cases, neither industrialists, nor artisans, nor traders are to blame. They are only integrating into their selling price spectacular price increases over the last 12 months on the raw materials market: +154% for cocoa, +35% for gold and silver.
