The director of the Sherbrooke Fire Protection Service (SPCIS), Martin Primeau, indicated that his on-site investigator had transferred the file to the Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS) upon observing certain particularities of the scene. “It is a building that is not powered by electricity or any other energy. It’s a vacant building, and there were two sources of fire,” he commented on Monday.
In its weekend report, the SPS actually mentioned that this fire “is criminal in nature”, without being able to give more details immediately since an investigator has not yet been assigned to the case.
This was not the first time that such interventions had to be carried out at CS Brooks in recent years, the SPCIS mentioned on Saturday.
A third fire on Sunday
The weekend was busy for the SPCIS since a third fire broke out Sunday evening in an apartment building on Candiac Street in Sherbrooke. The day before, they were mobilized at CS Brooks, but also on Chemin Dion at the Signalisation des Cantons company.
Alerted around 7 p.m., the firefighters managed to control the fire which had started in one of the accommodations, said Mr. Primeau, who spoke of a probable cooking fire. Even though the structure was not damaged, two homes were particularly damaged, with damage estimated at $300,000.
All nine people on site were evacuated and taken care of by the Red Cross for 24 to 72 hours, said the director of SPCIS. The last time I heard, the electricity had not been restored and the tenants could therefore not return, he explained.
Of the eight homes, four were damaged by water, which is particularly “a shame one week before Christmas,” added Mr. Primeau.
