Steven Kitshoff spoke in the South African press about his serious neck injury, its causes and its consequences. And he admits it: he gave himself a big scare.
Steven Kitshoff will not have had a memorable 2024! The Springbok, after returning from a long convalescence due to a knee injury, suffered another far from benign neck injury. It was during a Currie Cup match with Western Province against the Griquas: “It was quite a scare. It happened in the weirdest way, in a completely innocuous meleetestifies the pillar in the South African media Rapport. She didn’t even collapse. I felt something crack in the back, three cracking noises: pop, pop, pop. I continued to play, thinking it was a torn muscle. But today, I know: I was two millimeters from disaster, from death.”
The explanation came to him later from a specialist he saw, who told him: “Look, you’re lucky we didn’t bury you within the week.” Kitshoff explains: “The vertebra that moved (the area concerned is at the level of cervical C1 and C2) is indeed very close to my brain channel. Without the operation, I would never have been able to play rugby again.”
The left pillar (32 years old, 83 caps) had suffered a major surgical procedure on November 20, for six hours, and some photos of which were published on his Instagram account.
For the resumption, the left pillar is not putting pressure on himself and announces that he is ready, by the month of February, to play golf again! “I will see the specialist in January to assess my recovery. If my neck holds up, I will go all the way. If I have to retire, I will be satisfied. But I am not finished, I still have been a warrior for my team.”
