In a few weeks, the elite of Belgian football will come together to choose the Golden Shoe. We will then know the successor of Toby Alderweireld.
Among those who emerge as favorites, there is Hans Vanaken, who was again crucial in the duel against the Genko leader by delivering a decisive pass for Andreas Skov Olsen at the end of the match.
The Bruges captain could therefore offer himself the most prestigious individual trophy in Belgian football for the third time after winning it twice in a row, in 2018 and 2019.
“Class incarnate”
“Hans Vanaken was impressive again [ce dimanche]. He was already decisive last year in winning the title. It’s class incarnate. Everything he does on the pitch exudes accuracy. He’s one of the five best players in the championship,” declared journalist Pieter-Jan Calcoen to the RTBF.
If Vanaken has been decisive with Bruges for a long time, the fact that he is the big favorite for the Golden Shoe still poses a problem for Nordin Jbari, who thinks that this is quite symptomatic of a championship which lacks talent .
“Not enough great players”
“Hans Vanaken is an excellent player, but we forget that he was absent for eight months in all the big matches. If he wins again, it proves that there are not enough great players in our championship” , says Jbari.
A championship which lacks big players but which still scored important points on the European scene last week, widening the gap on its pursuers and closing its gap on its predecessors.
If there is no shortage of talented players, the biggest difficulty is often to convince them to stay and resist the sirens of more upscale championships.
