Léon Marchand: when the star swimmer wins at the Budapest Worlds… without even being present!

The native received a new title on the sidelines of the short course world championships in Hungary. A ceremony to which the quadruple Olympic champion did not attend.

Even absent, he wins. When we take stock of the year 2024, the name of Léon Marchand is on everyone’s lips, particularly in the world of swimming. This Sunday, December 15, in Budapest, the Frenchman gleaned a new trophy, even though he had given up on competing in the short course world championships, “exhausted”.

The favorite personality of 18-30 year olds was elected “swimmer of the year 2024” by World Aquatics. Yet another title which rewards a year full of five Olympic medals, just that. With Toulouse absent, Canadian Summer McIntosh felt very alone on the big podium as she received the “swimmer of the year” prize.

If everything suggested that Léon Marchand had turned the page on 2024, this is not the case. As Christmas approaches, he decided to give one last gift to his fans, but especially to himself. Eager to “have fun”, the star swimmer will participate in the Indian Ocean meeting, starting this Friday, December 20, on Island.
