In the mixed zone, after Paris Saint-Germain’s victory (3-1) against Olympique Lyonnais, the Parisian winger returned to the insulting chants sung by Virage Auteuil. The incident led to a brief interruption of the match in the second half on Sunday evening at the Parc des Princes.
They could have ended up punishing their team, which had a very good match against OL (3-1), by dint of wanting to do as they please. Fortunately for Luis Enrique’s men, the interruption was only momentary, and the warning was without cost. Parisian supporters sang insulting chants against the Lyonnais on Sunday evening, during the closing clash of the 15th day of Ligue 1, at the Parc des Princes.
The repeated provocations of part of Virage Auteuil led to the interruption of the match for a few minutes in the second half. However, the Park announcer had ordered the Parisian supporters to stop these chants in the first half, when the first insults came down from the stands. Alas, not only did the club’s supporters not heed the warning, but they also chanted it for at least five minutes after returning from the locker room.
“The referee may decide to delay the kick-off of a match or to interrupt it, several times if necessary, due to serious incidents which may or may not lead to a return of the players and the referee team in the locker rooms. The match cannot begin or resume unless the serious incidents have ceased”, indicates article 549 of the regulations of the Professional Football League which referees are required to apply in such cases.
The Parisian captain for the evening, Achraf Hakimi, headed to the stand to make the supporters listen to reason and ensure that the match was not definitively stopped. “We also spoke to the referee and the delegate, they told us that it had to stop and that we were going to resume the match,” explained Ousmane Dembélé in the mixed zone. Author of the opener last night, the twirling Parisian winger understood afterwards the referee’s decision to interrupt the match. “These are chants that are difficult to hear in stadiums. I completely understand that the match is stopped.”
The match ended up resuming quite quickly, not without a final message, read by the announcer and displayed on the big screen, which was addressed to the stands where the chants were coming from: “insulting chants are prohibited. The match could be stopped or lost”. The LFP disciplinary committee recently sanctioned the capital club for homophobic chants against their Marseille counterparts. The club suffered the partial closure for a match of the Auteuil stand, which was partly empty during the visit of Toulouse on November 22.
