CONAKRY-The Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has just ended in Abuja, Nigeria.
One of the key resolutions taken by West African leaders during this 66th Extraordinary summit, is that of recording the “divorce” with the countries of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), made up of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
From January 29, 2025, these three Sahel countries led by military juntas will no longer be members of the regional bloc. The latter had indicated ahead of the summit their decision to separate from the regional organization as “irreversible”.
The heads of state meeting in Abuja this Sunday, December 15, 2024 took note of the departure of these States within the ECOWAS family. From January 29 to July 29, 2025, there will be a transitional period to allow AES countries to reverse their decision. If there is no “turn back” during this period, their departure will be final as of July 29.
The president of the ECOWAS Commission was tasked by the heads of state with organizing the transition period.
We will come back to it!
