It is currently up to the ECOWAS commission to take note of the withdrawal of the AES countries from the organization. It has been a year since Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger decided to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States. A year ago, the new strong men of the Sahel, Colonel Assimi Goïta, General Abdourahmane Tiani and Captain Ibrahim Traoré, decided to withdraw their respective countries from the geopolitical “puppet” that would be ECOWAS. The Commission is giving additional time for reflection until June 30, 2025 for a final exit. During this additional period, there will be 6 months of contacts and attempts to bring the 3 countries back into the fold of the West African organization. But given the position of the heads of state of the AES Confederation, we do not see how this will be possible, especially when we take into account France’s control over the political and economic game of ECOWAS.
Also because examples of anti-imperialist political regimes are multiplying on the continent. The most striking symbol is the rapid closure of French military bases in Chad and Senegal after those in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. The withdrawal of countries from the AES is surely a tempting example for many countries in the sub-region, and even on the continent.
