If the precise circumstances of the origin of the flames remain to be determined, the human toll is already dramatic. A 74 year old man diedthis Saturday, December 14, 2024, on the sidelines of the fire which broke out in his pavilion, in the town of Cerneux, in the east of the Seine-et-Marne. His wife, who had been able to leave the house, was poisoned by fumes and hospitalized in Provins. Fortunately, his life is not in danger.

The disaster broke out around 6 p.m. According to initial information, the man tried to rekindle the flames in the fireplace, which caused the fire. The septuagenarian, after leaving the house with his wife, would however have returned to the house, probably to try to contain the flames. The firefighters, who intervened, were unfortunately unable to resuscitate him.

A gendarmerie investigation was opened to “research the causes of death”, in order to understand how the fire could have started. At the end of November, a 31-year-old woman died in Saint-Loup-de-Naud, after the explosion in her house. Her husband had managed to pull himself out of the rubble.
