Bach, Messiaen, the National Orchestra of Ukraine…What the new musical season at Notre-Dame Cathedral promises

The Maîtrise Notre-Dame de , which participated in the ceremonies of December 7 and 8 in the cathedral, will inaugurate its season from next Tuesday with a “Magnificat” by Jean-Sébastien Bach, at the start of a season rich in some 50 concerts .

The approximately 80 singers from the three choirs (Children, Young Ensemble, Adults) will perform Tuesday and Wednesday, with on the program, in addition to Bach’s “Magnificat”, works by contemporary composers (“Regina Caeli” by Lise Borel, “Lux Aurumque ” by Eric Whitacre).

Henri Chalet and Emilie Fleury, choir directors of the Maîtrise, will conduct, with the Le Concert d’Astrée orchestra and five soloists – soprano Sandrine Piau, mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik and Lucile Richardot, tenor Julien Behr and bass-baritone Guilhem Worms. One of the organists of the grand organ, Vincent Dubois, will perform the “Apparition of the Eternal Church” by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992).

The 2024-2025 season will then be marked by 12 recitals, works by Bach, Mozart, Monteverdi, Fauré, Gregorian chant, but also creations, with commissions given to contemporary composers. Among the latter, Lise Borel will unveil “Trois motets pour Notre-Dame” on March 25, performed by cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Thierry Escaich, also one of the organists of the cathedral’s great organ, is expected with a “Te Deum for Notre-Dame” on June 12. This is a work “contextualized” to the monument itself, with “perhaps texts by Victor Hugo or contemporary authors” added to the Latin text and a reference to “destructive fire which becomes regenerative fire”he told AFP.

Another creation, a “Magnificat”, on September 30, written by Yves Castagnet, composer and organist of the Notre-Dame choir organ for more than 35 years. Among the guests, the National Orchestra of Ukraine is scheduled for July.
