A violent fire broke out during the night, around 1 a.m. this Sunday in Evreux. An apartment located on the first floor of the Vimeu building which has four, rue Carnotin the Netreville district, completely burned down. The smoke spread to the second and third floors and the stairwell.
At the time of the disaster, 21 people were in the building. They had to be evacuated by firefighters who arrived on site. Eleven people had to be rescued using the large ladder. The residents were examined by emergency services and nine of them had to be hospitalized for minor injuries. They were transported to the Evreux hospital center.
A major effort was deployed to put out the flames. The apartment where the fire started is completely destroyed. Two other homes as well as the stairwell were seriously damaged by the smoke. The stairwell is no longer passable at all.
The 21 residents of the building will have to be rehoused. Some – those who were not hospitalized – were taken care of during the night by city officials, the social landlord and insurers. We do not currently know the origin of the incident.
