Violent clashes on Saturday between security forces and Palestinian activists in Jenin left one dead and several injured, a medical source told AFP in this West Bank city which has been plagued by clashes for almost a week.
A lifeless body and several injured activists and security forces are at Ibn Sina hospital, added this source who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the situation in Jenin, a stronghold of Palestinian activists. engaged in the fight against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank since 1967. Like the adjacent refugee camps, it is home to armed factions who present themselves as “effective resistance” to the Israeli occupation, unlike the Palestinian Authority which coordinates security issues with Israel.
Operation to “fight against outlaws”
AFPTV footage showed members of the Palestinian security forces and armored vehicles patrolling Jenin and near the camp on Saturday, as gunshots rang out nearby. The spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, General Anouar Rajab, reported in a statement an operation launched at 5:00 a.m. (03:00 GMT) to “restore (security in) the Jenin refugee camp and fight against outlaws”.
Tensions have been high in the West Bank since the Palestinian Authority arrested several activists earlier this month, provoking inter-Palestinian clashes. The Jenin camp, like several others in the region, was also targeted by a major Israeli military offensive which left dozens of dead at the end of the summer.
Violence between Palestinian armed groups and Israeli soldiers, recurring in the northern West Bank before the war in Gaza triggered on October 7, 2023 by the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas against Israel, has since exploded.
