Friday December 13 around 10 p.m., a vehicle caught fire in the Las Planas tunnel in Nice Nord on the A8in the Nice-Ventimiglia direction.
In both directions of traffic, traffic was completely interrupted for more than an hour towards exit number 52.
Traffic has not resumed on the A8 only around 11 p.m. Friday evening. This Saturday morning, traffic was fluid on the A8.
Witnesses in shock, “explosions”…
“It happened suddenly,” Manon told Nice-Matin on Friday evening, just after the tragedy.
The young woman had indeed found herself trapped in the smoke. “All the cars piled up. We heard shouts ‘Fire, fire!’ I don’t know if it’s a truck or a car. Then there were explosions.”.
Manon had to abandon her car, like many other motorists. “Some tried to turn the car around on the highway”.
“I was afraid of an accident when I saw people turning around”Tony told us. He was also therebut not in the tunnel. He tried to help those trapped.
35 firefighters on site, no injuries
Quickly, the 35 firefighters dispatched to the site took care of clearing the thick smoke from the tunnel, using 12 emergency vehicles including a fire hose which contained the firewhile the gendarmes and Vinci Autoroutes secured the area.
“Several motorists were evacuated safely by the emergency services”wrote the latter.
There is no no injuries to report, announced SDIS 06, the Alpes-Maritimes fire and rescue service.
