Update Chrome: Google warns of 2 critical vulnerabilities!

Following Microsoft’s confirmation of a critical vulnerability in Windows this week, it might seem that Google’s confirmation of two high security vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser is of lesser concern. However, it is important not to be fooled by appearances: these two vulnerabilities must be taken with a very similar urgency, even if not completely equivalent. Chrome Browser Security Update — What we know about CVE-2024-12381 and CVE-2024-12382

The Google Chrome team confirmed in a post on December 10 that all users of the world’s most popular browser should immediately update their version to fix two major security vulnerabilities that have been discovered and rectified.

As is often the case with these types of announcements, Google did not provide technical details on these vulnerabilities, contenting itself with a brief description to allow as many users as possible to update and protect themselves before so that pirates cannot exploit them.

Here’s what we know:

• CVE-2024-12381 is a type confusion vulnerability in Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine.
• CVE-2024-12382 is a use-after-free vulnerability in Chrome’s translate feature.

Google recommends updating to recent versions, which include protections against CVE-2024-12381 and CVE-2024-12382, as follows:

These updates will be rolled out over the coming days and weeks, according to Google. However, it is advisable to protect yourself immediately by starting the Chrome browser update process.

To force the security update, go to the Help|About Google Chrome menu, and the download will begin automatically. When you see the update screen, make sure to click the restart button, otherwise the new protections will not be activated.
