Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the war in Ukraine during a phone call with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The latter assures that he wants to lead “ a peace mission ».
This call — initiated at the request of Viktor Orbán according to Russian authorities — came the day after the announcement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó that his country would continue its “peace mission” a Ukraine.
“There was an in-depth exchange of views on Ukrainian issues”the Kremlin said in a report of the call, adding that Vladimir Putin had said that kyiv had adopted a position “destructive” which excluded a peace agreement.
« [Viktor] Orbán expressed interest in jointly seeking political-diplomatic ways to resolve the crisis »added the Kremlin.
Earlier this week, Viktor Orbán met with Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida. The future US president has pledged to reach a peace deal within hours of taking office at the White House in January.
However, the Hungarian Prime Minister did not convey any message from Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Russian news agency TASS, adding that no conversation between the two political leaders was not planned at the moment.
“Until now, there have been no initiatives from [Donald] Trump, […] we are waiting for the inauguration, and we will see”added the Kremlin spokesperson.
Viktor Orban has repeatedly called for peace talks between Moscow and kyiv, and since Russia launched its offensive in February 2022, has refused to provide military aid to Ukraine.
Viktor Orban irritated his European counterparts last July – a few days after taking the reins of the EU Council for six months – by initiating discussions with Russia, in order to explore means of resolving the war in Ukraine.
Donald Tusk on the path to peace
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is also doing everything possible to position his country at the forefront of efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine.
He thus invited French President Emmanuel Macron to go to Warsaw on Thursday, December 12, to take stock of the weekend’s talks with Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Donald Tusk claimed to be in permanent contact with his Scandinavian and Baltic allies. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to visit Warsaw in January, when Poland takes over the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
