After anti-Semitic arson, Melbourne synagogue raises $600,000

The Adass Israel Synagogue has raised more than $600,000 in a crowdfunding campaign for its reconstruction, after it was destroyed by an anti-Semitic arson attack last Friday.

“The horrific attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue is an attack on the very heart of the Jewish community and on our Australian way of life,” the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) said in a statement.

“We cannot let this un-Australian hatred destroy the country we love. We must support the Adass community and help them rebuild, and build back even stronger. »

The Adass synagogue brings together a Hasidic community of several hundred families.

It was founded in 1949 by Holocaust survivors from Hungary, Germany, the former Czechoslovakia and Poland. Many current members are Holocaust survivors or descendants of Holocaust survivors.

Some of the Torah scrolls that were saved from last week’s fire had been rescued from the ashes of the Holocaust, the campaign’s website states.

Counterterrorism police are searching for three suspects suspected of setting fire to the Adass Israel synagogue in the early hours of Friday.

The fire attracted international condemnation, while a leading Jewish human rights group warned that Australia may no longer be safe for Jewish tourists.

A member of the congregation present in the single-story building was slightly injured. The fire has strained relations between Australia and its ally Israel, as well as between Australian authorities and the local Jewish community.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was heckled during his visit on Tuesday.
