William Ruto takes over as EAC president

Kenyan President William Ruto has been elected as the new president of the East African Community, succeeding South Sudan President Salva Kiir. Ruto was named at the 24th East African Community Heads of State Summit in Arusha, Tanzania.

Initially, it was expected that the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, would assume the presidency of the summit. However, the latter was absent from the summit and did not send a representative.

Ruto will lead the East African Community (EAC) until the 25th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State to be held next year. The 24th Ordinary Summit brought together the region’s leaders to discuss critical issues shaping East Africa’s future.

This summit, organized under the theme of the 25th anniversary of the EAC, also served as a platform to reflect on the achievements of the past 25 years and plan for deeper regional integration.

Key agenda items included strengthening economic resilience, promoting peace and security, and promoting initiatives to boost intra-regional trade and development.

President Ruto’s election was confirmed on Saturday, following a vote by heads of state of the seven EAC member countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia.

After taking office as President, Ruto took the opportunity to commend President Salva Kiir for his successful leadership in the community over the past year.

« Congratulations, Excellency, you have made us all proud said Mr Ruto. “ Under his leadership, the EAC has made immense progress in deepening integration and in key areas that define our shared aspirations. His efforts and dedication deserve our greatest gratitude.. »

Ruto also pledged to work closely with other regional leaders to advance the community’s mission and vision.
