The German manufacturer Cube Bikes aims to set up a factory in Egypt to manufacture carbon fiber reinforced polymer parts (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Production volumes could reach 300,000 pieces per year. An interesting project, when we know that the productive heart of the sector is in Asia.
Asia – and more specifically China, Taiwan and Vietnam – is the main region where the components of our electric bicycles and mechanical bicycles are produced, from transmissions to brakes, including frames, certain engines and even tires. It is truly the nerve center of the sector in terms of production.
Cube is very interested in Egypt
Seeing Cube Bikes eyeing Egyptian land to set up a component factory there is therefore an “astonishing” thing. This is at least not the norm, and whatever happens, it remains interesting to see major German players establishing themselves in hitherto little-exploited areas.
As we learn Bike EUwhich reports elements from an Egyptian press agency, this project results from meetings between the Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan El Khatib, and senior German officials, as well as business representatives, including those from Cube Bikes.
The idea is to install a factory capable of producing carbon fiber reinforced polymer parts, at a rate of 300,000 units per year. Exports could be around the symbolic value of 10 million euros, for an initial investment of 5 million euros. In short, all this would quickly pay for itself.
A 40,000 square meter plot of land in sight
Cubes Bikes is reportedly already planning a second visit to Egypt, to secure a 40,000 square meter plot of land in the city of Ramadan, northeast of Cairo, reports Bike EU. The overseas firm could even go further, since it would even consider building a bicycle production factory.
To see if this initiative will inspire other European manufacturers, and if a dynamic more concentrated towards this region of Africa will gradually be put in place over the coming years.
