War in Ukraine: peace negotiations with Russia could begin this winter, says Polish Prime Minister

Peace negotiations in Ukraine could “start” this winter, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday as Warsaw takes over the rotating EU presidency in January.

Donald Tusk, a staunch ally of neighboring Ukraine, indicated that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday and that he would welcome French President Emmanuel Macron to Poland on Thursday.

“Our presidency will be co-responsible, among other things, for what the political landscape will be, for what the situation will be perhaps during the (peace) negotiations, which, again there are question marks, will perhaps begin be in winter this year. »

“Today I will have the opportunity to discuss it with President Volodymyr Zelensky,” he said, also announcing the visits to Warsaw of the leader of the German conservatives (CDU) Friedrich Merz, candidate for the chancellery and favorite of the German legislative elections, and of French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Friedrich Merz will keep me informed of his discussions in kyiv,” he said adding that “President Macron will be with us the day after tomorrow” to “inform us of the results of the discussions” which took place in between him, Messrs. Trump and Zelensky, during a meeting that Donald Tusk described as “brief but important”.

Donald Tusk also indicated that he was in “close contact” with his Scandinavian and Baltic allies, “who view Poland and the Polish presidency as the leader of this future effort, the end result of which will, I hope, be peace “. “I spoke with the Swedish Prime Minister and, in a dozen hours, the Estonian Prime Minister will be here in Warsaw,” he added.
