A fire that occurred on Monday in a fuel depot of the Italian energy supplier Eni in Calenzano, in Tuscany (center), left two dead, three missing and nine injured, according to the regional prefecture.
“Two people lost their lives, there are nine injured and three people missing,” a prefecture spokesperson told AFP.
A perimeter of five kilometers around the site has been decreed, within which residents are invited to confine themselves to their homes so as not to be inconvenienced by the fumes.
An “explosion”
The fire was caused by a “explosion“, had indicated earlier the president of the Tuscany region, Eugenio Giani on Telegram. According to a press release from Eni, the fire was limited to a loading zone on this site linked to the Livorno refinery, without ever threatening the the entire storage park.
Amateur videos posted on social media show flames several meters high and a huge plume of black smoke emerging from the site, not far from the fuel tanks.
Civil Protection asked residents in the region to close their doors and windows.
Investigations are underway to determine the causes of the fire, as well as its environmental and health consequences.
Experts were sent to the site to assess the risks of pollution, including for neighboring waterways, according to Mr. Giani.
