The results of a study led by the Federal public service Mobility are surprising: a little less than the half of Belgians never use the public transport. These results are surprising, because for several years, we have continued to talk about multimodality for transport while there are numerous initiatives, whether to redeploy the tram or buses in certain cities, or to put more cars into service. shared, more trains, fleets of bicycles, etc.
Too rare opportunities
According to the Federal Public Mobility Service, barely 1% of those surveyed travel 6 to 7 days a week in traina percentage which increases to 3 for the metrothe tram or not bus. Which remains very weak. Thus, 34% of those questioned say they travel by train a few days a year and 28% use the metro, tram or bus a few days a year. The use is therefore particularly weak considering the amounts invested in these services, it is obvious. And just as obvious: the travel habits therefore do not change.
But why are Belgians so resistant to public transport? And here too the SPF provides an answer. They are in fact 20% to point out the problems minors or adults encountered when traveling by public transport. A rate which logically rises to 74% among people suffering from disabilities or who need occasional help (seniors, etc.). It should be noted that women also highlight the difficulty of traveling by public transport with children, shopping or suitcases.

What future?
This survey highlights not only the unsuitable offer, but also the excessive numerous malfunctions which continue to characterize public transport. Under these conditions, does it make sense to continue investing in modes of transport that are ultimately not used? Or too little? We can ask ourselves the question of the tram in Liège prohibitive costs (and part of which has been deleted) or the new Brussels metro lines, to name just one. Travel habits clearly remain entrenched simply because the service offering is inadequate. And we could also add a financial dimension : taking public transport is also far too expensive. Is it indeed normal to pay 28 euros for a family trip (4 people) between Brussels and Antwerp (and without return)? Or 54.8 euros for a Brussels-Liège? Definitely no! Public authorities should therefore not be too surprised by the results and the reality.
