A humanitarian exchange proposal

Hamas handed over a first list of Israeli hostages to Egyptian intelligence services on Sunday as part of negotiations for an exchange agreement. According to the newspaper Al-Arabi Al-Jadidthis list includes “elderly and sick” hostages, as well as four Americans. The latter would not meet the criteria for immediate release, but are mentioned as part of a broader process.

The resistance movement offers a 60 day truceduring which he would allow the entry of food, medicine and fuel into the Gaza Strip. In return, Hamas demands the release of a certain number of Palestinian prisoners currently held by Israel.

Negotiations underway in Cairo

An Israeli delegation is expected in the Egyptian capital in the coming hours to negotiate the terms of this exchange. According to sources relayed by the Israeli public channel Can 11discussions are progressing positively. A “small agreement” would be considered for the release of hostages described as “humanitarian cases”. Israel, however, seeks to extend this release to a larger number of captives.

The terms would also include a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from certain areas during the truce, although these details still remain unclear.

Unfavorable geopolitical context for Hamas and international pressures

Sources close to the negotiations indicate that Hamas finds itself in a position of increasing isolation, particularly after the ceasefire in Lebanon and the setbacks suffered by Hezbollah. The resistance movement would face increased pressure from international mediators, particularly after the change of government in the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the families of the hostages to update them on the progress. He reportedly affirmed his support for a temporary truce, saying: “What worked in the North will also work in the South.” Netanyahu also cited the recent election of Donald Trump as an element that created a new dynamic in the discussions.
