In a tense political context, Gabriel Attal was elected this Sunday as Secretary General of Renaissance, the party founded by Emmanuel Macron. An important step for the former Prime Minister who never hid his ambition.
After Christophe Castaner, Stanislas Guerini and Stephane Séjourné, the Renaissance party came under a new presidency. This Sunday, Gabriel Attal was elected Secretary General of the party founded by Emmanuel Macron. The former Prime Minister was able to benefit from the withdrawal of Elisabeth Borne, a one-time candidate.
The latter was elected president of the party’s National Council.
This election was organized amid almost general indifference, between political crisis and the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral.
Dismissed from his position as Prime Minister after the dissolution of the National Assembly by Emmanuel Macron on June 9, Gabriel Attal continues his political career within the “central bloc”.
At the end of the early legislative elections, he took over as president of the Ensemble pour la République group at the Palais-Bourbon.
A party in difficulty
Gabriel Attal thus takes the reins of a party in decline. Indeed, Renaissance, marked by electoral defeats in particular, is today discreet about its number of members. Although weakened, the party at least managed to avoid an internal struggle.
The new Secretary General is expected to deliver a speech at midday. He will outline some priorities and a work schedule for the year 2025. “It is the right time to show the doctrinal path he wants to take,” hoped a history of “En Marche”, in an interview given to the AFP.
Gabriel Attal, however, intends to leave himself a little time, particularly for the installation of the executive office, the party government. In the central block, competition is organized. Édouard Philippe is already a declared candidate for the Elysée and his party, Horizons, is preparing regional meetings, the first on January 26 in Bordeaux.
A member of Renaissance, Gérald Darmanin recently launched his think tank, Populaires, and his financing association received approval from the authorities, published on Saturday in the Official Journal.
