In November 2024, the cabinetmaker from Mortagne-au-Perche (Orne) Fabien Ferreri was selected to participate in the Fibois Normandie 2024 Wood & Design Competition. A competition which aims to promote French wood and the skills of regional companies.

Fabien Ferreri, who exhibits his works at Atelier Villard, has created a wooden lamp called “I salute you old ocean”.

A work that pays tribute to Jean Cuisenier, former patron of the National Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, and close to Claude Lévy-Strauss and Raymond Aron.

I worked a lot with him, and I wanted to make a piece that reflects his attachment to the land and his navigator's spirit.

This results in a walnut lamp with a solid seat, and a paper lampshade reminiscent of sailing.

For this achievement, Fabien Ferreri won the first professional prize.

It’s a real personal recognition, which shows that I’m not wrong in the choices I make. I also hope that this will give a little foundation to my notoriety.

A forgotten walnut tree in Gacé

Faithful to his principles of only working with local wood, the cabinetmaker had recovered walnut from a sawmill in Gacé. A tree that had been cut down, then forgotten for 15 years. It will not be forgotten by everyone, since Atelier Villard recovered it in 2019 and was able to compose this work.

The assembly is intended to be traditional, with recesses and overlaps, and complications with variations in the angles of the pieces of wood.

For the lamp part, the Japanese papers are made of mulberry fiber, created by Benoit Dudognon, using the “nagashizuki” technique (art of running the dough over the sieve), all installed with LED lighting.

The piece will be exhibited in the window of the Villard workshop, and will undoubtedly be presented at the next European Crafts Days in Mortagne-au-Perche.
