According to Israeli media, the accident occurred as thick fog enveloped the area. The first elements do not suggest that this could be a criminal act.
The victims were part of the Breslev Hasidic community and were traveling to Morocco to visit tombs of Jewish dignitaries and other places of pilgrimage, according to the Ynet website.
The group of pilgrims, who were traveling in several cars, became concerned when some of their members did not arrive at their destination. They alerted local authorities, who found the wrecked car several hours later, according to Ynet.
The Moroccan news site Hespress reports that the accident occurred on the road between Zagora and Tinghir, when the vehicle deviated from its path and overturned, killing all five passengers instantly.
At least some of the victims resided in Safed, in northern Israel. Safed Mayor Yossi Kakon confirmed that “several Safed residents are among the victims.”
The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed it had been informed of the accident and indicated that Israeli representatives in Rabat were closely following the matter.
The Israeli organization ZAKA, which manages the remains of victims of accidents and attacks in accordance with Jewish tradition, announced that it was in contact with the local Jewish community. She is working to organize the transport of the bodies to Casablanca, before their repatriation to Israel for burial.
