A report sheds light on the circumstances of the death of Lucas, a 25-year-old young man who died at Hyères hospital (Var) in October 2023. Highly publicized, the case was notably reported through the voice from his mother, who wanted answers to the many questions that remained unanswered.

The General Inspectorate of Social Affairs worked for several months on a report that can be consulted online. In this long work, the result of which is nearly 200 pages, “dysfunctions are highlighted” explains Maître Thomas Callen, lawyer for the family, to France 3 Côte d'Azur.
In this report, we learn in particular that on the day of Lucas' admission, “activity in the emergency room was particularly high”. The number of visits reached 114 on September 30, 2023, while the hospital's annual average is 96.
Delays in the processing of biological samples and in the medical link maintained with the family are also pointed out. “The information given to the family was late and insufficient.”
The absence of direct exchanges with the family deprived the care team of valuable information on the history of the disease, likely to guide the diagnosis.
IGAS report on the death of young Lucas
Contacted by France 3 Côte d'Azur, Lucas' mother greets “incredible investigative work” and underlines “the quality of the report”.
A series of problems has clearly been identified, which is in line with what we thought.
Corinne Godefroy, mother of Lucas
For her, who publicized the case, the report very clearly highlights flaws in Lucas' care and also allows us to go further in order to improve the emergency situation. Local and national recommendations are thus formulated in this report, including in particular the improvement of surveillance and traceability procedures as well as the redefinition of family access and the extension of infrastructures.
Justice had to be done for Lucas and the care of all patients had to be improved. We have achieved our goal, that this never happens again.
Corinne Godefroy, mother of Lucas
This report was commissioned by the Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity.
