A fire broke out inside the aquaculture station of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMER) of the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. No one was injured, but equipment was “significantly” damaged and fish were lost.

Thursday morning, a team of claims experts were on site to assess the damage, the extent of which remains to be determined. The damage associated with the blaze remained confined to the basin area, without however affecting the exterior envelope.

We are aware of the stress that this situation can cause to the research teams at the aquaculture station. Know that theUQAR is doing everything possible to mitigate the consequences of this fire on those affectedwrote vice-rector Benoît Desbiens, in a message sent to the university community.

The building, essential for research into the effects of climate change on estuarine species, is the subject of an expansion project estimated at $8 million.
