Despite the life sentence of Giulia Cecchettin’s murderer, her femicide is a “collective defeat”

The affair shocked Italy and put the fight against violence against women at the forefront of the political scene in the country. Tuesday December 3, a little more than two months after the opening of the trial, the Venice Assize Court sentenced Filippo Turetta to life imprisonment for the murder of Giulia Cecchettin, his former partner, in November 2023. However, Filippo Turetta inflicted 75 stab wounds on the woman who had decided to end their romantic relationship, before abandoning her body near a pond and fleeing to Germany, where he is arrested a few days later.
