“Many European distributors prefer Spanish lemons despite their higher price”

The lemon season in the Murcia region is progressing with a slightly delayed harvest and, although sales have been relatively stagnant since November, reasonable prices are being maintained for a good quality product.

“This year we have a good harvest in terms of volume, although it is lower than last year, when we reached a historic production record and the consequences were disastrous for the entire sector,” explains Enrique Fuentes, sales director of the Murcian company Hijos de Alberto del Cerro. “The autumn rains were rather beneficial for the lemon in Murcia, where we had a particularly dry spring and an abundance of small sizes due to the lack of water. »

Despite a good harvest, according to the producer and exporter, prices are not suffering. “Compared to last season, the harvest is slightly late and there is no avalanche of supply available. Although sales have been rather stagnant since November, the fact that there has been no oversupply so far allows sales prices to be maintained reasonable, as well as for farmers. »

“It’s positive, there is more balance this season considering that we are coming out of two difficult seasons, especially last season, where around 20% of the crop was not harvested due to the collapse of prices.

Enrique Fuentes is convinced that in the coming weeks, which will coincide with the Christmas period, the demand for lemons will resume: “The consumption of lemons tends to increase as Christmas approaches. We also expect the supply of lemons from Turkey to start decreasing from January. It looks like we may be able to extend the Primofiori lemon season a bit this year. »

“It should be noted that a large part of European retail opts for Spanish lemons because they are reasonably priced and have a good reputation for food safety. Many European chains prefer Spanish lemons even if they cost a few cents more than those from third countries,” says Enrique Fuentes.

Although Egypt continues to increase its lemon production volumes each year, Hijos de Sales Director Alberto del Cerro emphasizes that “Spain will continue to have a very competitive logistical position in Europe compared to third-party origins . »
