On the sidelines of the last Qatar GP, Fernando Alonso showed great irony about the incident between Max Verstappen and George Russell, agreeing with Verstappen on the perceived injustice of the penalty of one place on the grid which cost pole position. Verstappen had criticized Russell’s behavior, saying he had “lost all respect” after the latter convinced the stewards that Verstappen deserved a penalty for driving too slowly during a cool-down lap.

Alonso clearly insinuated, in comments relayed by Motorsport, that Russell could be partly to blame for the incident: “Max was driving slowly, but George was also on a slow lap. » With a touch of humor, the double world champion mentioned a similar strategy for the next Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi: “Maybe I will accelerate towards my rival during my warm-up lap in Abu Dhabi and ask that he be punished. I will push like an idiot to create a penalty. I’m going to do the same! We need to pay attention to this now. »
A critical Fernando Alonso but who nevertheless praised the work of the new race director, Rui Marques, who had to simultaneously supervise F1, F2 and the F1 Academy after the sudden departure of Niels Wittich before the Las Vegas GP: “He did a good job. I’m happy with that. »
