Tucker Carlson returns to Russia and questions the foreign minister

US conservative media personality Tucker Carlson said Wednesday he was returning to Russia to interview Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Mr Carlson, a strong supporter of US President-elect Donald Trump, interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in February, his first interview with a US journalist since before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine .

Appearing outside the Kremlin in a video posted on his website, Mr. Carlson said Wednesday that he would ask Mr. Lavrov whether the United States and Russia are heading toward a potentially nuclear conflict and whether Moscow believes that Mr. Trump will end the war in Ukraine.

The host indicated that the interview with Mr. Lavrov would be broadcast “very soon”, without specifying a date.

US media commentators have widely criticized Mr Carlson’s handling of Mr Putin’s interview, saying Mr Carlson let the Kremlin leader control the agenda and did not press issues important ones such as allegations of war crimes in Ukraine.

Mr. Carlson did not specify where Mr. Lavrov’s interview would be broadcast. Mr. Putin’s two-hour interview was broadcast on Mr. Carlson’s Internet platform and the social media site X.

Mr. Trump, who has criticized US support for kyiv under President Joe Biden, promised during his election campaign to quickly end the war in Ukraine, without detailing his plans. The president-elect said he would name retired U.S. Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg as special envoy to Ukraine.

Mr Kellogg proposed freezing the battle lines and forcing kyiv and Moscow to negotiate, according to Reuters.
