Evenepoel was cycling on a custom gold model following his Olympic success, which was broken in two on impact.

In 2020, aged just 20 in his second full season, Evenepoel suffered a horrific accident at Il Lombardia, where he fell around nine meters from a bridge into a ravine, fracturing his pelvis.
