On Friday, November 29, a hunting accident as tragic as it was rare took place in the canton of Vaud, a Friborg resident having been killed by a shot during a wild boar hunt. On Sunday, the Vaud Federation of DIANA sections reacted by insisting on the fact that when hunting, respecting safety rules is essential.
This Monday, it is the Young Greens of Vaud who are reacting to this accident. But they are asking to make access to the hunting license and its renewal more difficult. “It is absurd that the requirements for the hunting license are less strict than those for the driving license, when hunting involves, by its nature, very goal, the death of others,” declared Gaëlle Valterio, co-president of the party, in a press release.
The Young Greens had already submitted an inquiry on this subject in June to the Grand Council, but the response from the Council of State seemed insufficient to them. Friday’s accident therefore pushes them to reiterate their demands: zero tolerance to alcohol for hunters, introduction of continuing training and compulsory health checks for hunting license holders and, finally, definitive withdrawal of the license in the event of serious breaches.
The press release recalls that, unlike the canton of Vaud, that of Neuchâtel has set an alcohol limit for hunters, which is 0.5 per thousand. The Young Greens are asking for at least that, in the absence of zero tolerance.
“Do we still dare to walk in the forest without fearing for our safety? Hunting accidents are a reminder of how urgent it is to put in place effective measures to protect users of natural spaces, argues Quentin Wenger, Young Greens municipal councilor in Échallens.
