Debates on the 2025 budget began on Tuesday at the National Council. The bourgeois camp stressed the importance of having a budget that respects the debt brake.
Respecting the debt brake is one of the three objectives of the SVP for this budget, indicated Lars Guggisberg (UDC/BE). His party will also commit to strengthening the army without weakening agriculture.
He will also oppose any tax increases. The Confederation has a problem of expenditure and not of revenue, underlined the Bernese. And to indicate that over the last thirty years, the Confederation’s expenses have practically tripled while the economy has only doubled.
The SVP wants a financial policy “at the service of Swiss citizens”, continued its party colleague Thomas Stettler (JU). He also called for respecting the debt brake, recalling that “today’s debts are tomorrow’s taxes”.
For the Center too, respecting the debt brake is important. We must show discipline, noted Pius Kaufmann (C/LU). And to specify that any new expenditure must have counter-financing. If the Confederation is to take over tasks from the cantons, the distribution of direct federal tax revenue must be adapted.
Military spending
His party colleague Reto Nause (BE) for his part justified the increase in military spending. The threat is real, we must be able to defend ourselves again, he stressed. And to add that we are now correcting the sharp cuts of recent decades.
The PLR also defended the increase in army spending. The security situation has changed and the budget must take this into account, indicated Peter Schilliger (PLR/LU). And to recall that his party will oppose any attack on the debt brake.
He will also oppose any new taxes. The Confederation has a problem of expenditure and not of revenue, he also argued. And to see significant savings potential in the Confederation’s staff.
