Archaeologists have just made a special discovery in the north of Luxembourg. During excavations at Parc Hosingen, the foundations of a Roman fortress and 141 coins were found.
The four years of excavations were not in vain at the place called Um Rank in Holzthum (municipality of Parc Holsingen). This is how the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture and National Institute of Archaeological Research (INRA) announce the discovery of a “ imposing fortified building from the Late Roman Empire, identified by archaeologists as a burgus “. And added to it 141 Roman coins.
The coin was dated second half of the 4th century AD. On these gold coins (solid), we can see the faces of 9 different emperors having reigned between 364 et 408.
It is rare for researchers to find such a treasure in its historical context. And now INRA archaeologists hope to understand why the pieces were buried there. In any case, as experienced numismatists, the “treasure” is estimated at 308.600 euros.
For this evaluation, it was taken into account that the parts are in good condition and that among them there are pieces raresespecially those with the face of theEmperor Eugene who reigned only two years (392-394).
During the excavations, the researchers had to proceed with even more care than usual. Indeed, their research site contained lots of ammunition and explosive devices dating from the Second World War… From the usefulness of the presence of mine clearance specialists from the Luxembourg Army during certain operations.
The excavations are now complete. The objects discovered will be analyzed in laboratory and the results will be published in scientific journals.
