What is the economic impact of Shein in ?

A contribution of 640 million euros and the support of 2,900 jobs, this is what the report, transmitted by the consultancy firm Oxford Economics, estimates and announces on the economic impact of Shein in .

Chinese ultra-fast fashion brand Shein has commissioned a study from consultancy firm Oxford Economics into its economic impact for some of the key markets in the European Union, Italy, Poland and France. At the end of November 2024, it delivers the results of this long investigation. What about France?

Of the 640 million euros total impact on France, the direct impact generated by retail and wholesale operations is estimated at 337 million euros (nearly half).

The indirect impact is estimated at €240 million: it corresponds to spending on local service providers who, in turn, employ staff, generate profits and make other purchases.

The three sectors that benefit the most from Shein's operations in France are professional and business services, wholesale and retail sectors, and transportation and warehousing. Jobs also supported range from financial services to accommodation, including catering and information technology.

Shein opposes the economic impact to the ecological impact

For every ten euros of GDP generated by SHEIN sales in France, an additional nine euros of GDP were supported in other sectors of the French economy.

Finally, the induced impact would be 60 million. It corresponds to the expenses of employees employed by Shein France. The workforce only has 22 jobs, but reflects the structure of activities. This team is responsible for the integration of digitalization strategies in the French market in order to improve service delivery with partners and customers. The sum of the three impacts gives the total impact.

Based on this data concerning France, Oxford Economics indicates that in Europe, more than one hundred million people interact with the platform each month on average. In addition to the EMEA headquarters in Ireland, Shein now has offices in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. Shein also operates distribution and fulfillment centers in Wroclaw, Poland, and Stradella, Italy.

According to the press release, this corresponds to thousands of local jobs and the brand continues to invest to increase its economic footprint (and not carbon, as you will have understood). The purpose of this study? Guide future growth and investment projects.
