Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has arrived in Hawaii, United States, for a stopover as part of his Pacific tour. China has hinted it may take countermeasures.
Taiwan's presidency said Lai was welcomed by Hawaii's governor and other officials on Saturday local time. He visited a museum and saw exhibits related to Taiwan.
This is Mr. Lai's first overseas trip since taking office. In particular, he must visit the Pacific island countries which maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday saying the ministry had “made serious protests” to the United States.
He also specifies that “China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the United States and the Taiwan region”.
The statement hinted at countermeasures, saying “China will closely monitor developments and take resolute and strong measures” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Reuters news agency quotes Taiwanese authorities as saying that Beijing is likely to launch military exercises in the coming days on the outskirts of Taiwan.
Taipei has decided to step up its vigilance.
