Redemption of gold and precious metals

In Gers, during gold sales operations by individuals, it was noted that redemptions made in temporary locations were often at excessively low prices. A call for vigilance is therefore launched.

The DDETS-PP (Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor, Solidarity and Population Protection) of Gers alerts consumers to the sometimes questionable practices observed during gold and precious metals redemption operations. These transactions, often organized in temporary locations such as hotels or village halls, can have prices significantly lower than those charged by established professionals.

During these operations, excessively low gold repurchase prices were noted compared to those charged by well-established establishments.

If you are considering selling your gold jewelry, coins or objects, follow these tips to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Gold redemption: what the law says

Since the law of March 17, 2014, several rules govern the sale of precious metals to protect consumers:

Mandatory written contract : Any transaction must be formalized by a contract mentioning key information such as the weight, the purity of the gold (in thousandths), the price including taxes, and the full contact details of both parties.

Ban on cash payment : Payment must be made by crossed check or bank transfer.

48-hour right of withdrawal : You have the right to change your mind within two days after signing the contract (except for gold investments). In the event of withdrawal, the consumer returns the money and recovers their goods, or, if the latter is not returned, the professional is required to reimburse double the price paid.

The obligations of professionals

Gold repurchase professionals must comply with strict regulations:

Display of purchase price : The price offered for gold and other precious metals must be clearly displayed in the reception area or on the website. Simply stating “at the gold price” is not enough.

Weighing objects : This must be carried out in front of you, using precise and professional equipment.

Transaction register : The objects purchased, their description and the identity of the seller must be recorded in a “police book” to prevent cases of receiving stolen objects.

Practical advice for a safe sale

Before selling

Compare offers : Consult several professionals to obtain an accurate and fair estimate. The value of signed jewelry or collectibles can exceed their mere weight in gold.

Avoid temporary locations : Prefer establishments with a fixed address and a solid reputation. Be wary of offers in hotels or during door-to-door sales, which may hide abusive practices.

During the transaction

  • Make sure the price is clear and understandable.
  • Demand transparent weighing and information on the quality of the gold (18 or 24 carat).

For online sales :

Check the legitimacy of the website. This must display all legal information: company name, address, contact details, registration number in the commercial register, displayed purchase price, and return conditions.

Increased vigilance for vulnerable groups

Elderly or vulnerable people are particularly exposed to fraudulent practices. If a loved one wishes to sell gold objects, support them in their efforts to guarantee the security of the transaction.

What to do in the event of a dispute?

If you encounter a problem during a sale, quickly contact the Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP) of Gers. This structure is at your disposal to assist you in resolving disputes and ensuring your rights are respected.

By following these recommendations, you will avoid common pitfalls and be able to sell your precious metals with complete peace of mind. Be informed, be vigilant!
