Unsurprisingly, Nafi Thiam still sits above the fray in Belgian athletics.
The Spike d’Or ceremony, the prizes rewarding the best Belgian athletes of the year, rewarded Saturday in Mechelen without surprise the heptathlete Nafi Thiam, on the women’s side, and the marathon runner Bashir Abdi, on the men’s side.
Thiam won his third consecutive Olympic title this summer in Paris, after a third European title in Rome at the beginning of June. The 30-year-old from Namur had won her first 9 “golden spikes” consecutively between 2013 and 2022. Last year, while Thiam had chosen to observe a blank summer season to spare his Achilles tendons, the reward went to Cynthia Bolingo.
Abdi, 35, took away his 2nd Olympic medal in 2024 by climbing onto the 2nd step of the Parisian podium. The European marathon record holder was preferred to Alexander Doom, the double indoor world champion (400m and 4x400m) and European 400m champion who this year also took the Belgian lap record which dated back to 2012. This is the 5th consecutive Spike d’Or for Ghent.
