Volodymyr Zelensky's proposal, ready for territorial concessions in exchange for NATO protection, is “unrealistic”reacts General Dominique Trinquand, former head of the French military mission to the UN, on franceinfo Saturday November 30. “Putting the territory under NATO protection is precisely what led to the war”he explains.
On the other hand, General Trinquand judges more “realistic” the proposal of a diplomatic solution. But “you cannot give the result of the discussion before starting the discussion”warns the general who criticizes the Ukrainian president for already announcing that he will recover the occupied areas. The Ukrainian president has in fact suggested that he would be ready to wait before reconquering the territories occupied by the Russians, in exchange for NATO protection for the rest of the country, and thus putting an end to the fighting.
Why this strategy? Volodymyr Zelensky “realized that he cannot regain the ground”analyzes General Trinquand, “but with regard to the Ukrainian population, he cannot suddenly turn around completely 180 degrees. To agree to say that they will not be able to conquer them is already a gigantic step.”
