NHL: Beaten in Washington, the Islanders escape another game

Jakob Chychrun scored his seventh goal of the season 1:20 into overtime on Friday, giving the Washington Capitals a 5-4 victory and inflicting a third straight loss on the New York Islanders.

Chychrun carried the puck from one end of the ice to the other before beating Semyon Varlamov with a shot from the top of the circles.

Patrick Roy’s squad, which led 4-2 after 40 minutes, allowed three unanswered goals after the second period in each of the matches in its three-game losing streak.

On Monday against the Detroit Red Wings, they lost 4-2 while holding a 2-1 lead after the second period. The scenario repeated itself on Wednesday against the Boston Bruins, as they suffered a 6-3 loss after starting the third with a tied score of 3-3.

“I think we played a pretty solid game, but once again we blew it in the third period and that’s a problem we have to resolve,” said Simon Holmstrom.

“We played very well in the first two periods,” corroborated his teammate Noah Dobson. “I think you have to find a way to weather the storm even if the opponent scores a goal and they start strong in the third, you have to find how to finish the games well. »

The Islanders, who were blanked on three occasions on the massive attack, have lost eight of their last ten games (2-4-4).

“Our numerical advantage must produce,” said coach Patrick Roy. “Tonight, that’s what made the difference. They scored twice in superiority, while on our side, I don’t know if we generated chances on the first unit, so we have to do better. »

Tom Wilson scored two goals, Dylan Strome had a goal and two assists and Connor McMichael had three assists for the Capitals, who have won their last three games.

“Usually, it’s easier to play with a lead, but that says a lot about our group,” said Wilson after the team’s ninth comeback this season. “Even if we lag behind, we should never count ourselves beaten. We don’t want to make it a bad habit, but knowing that we know how to regroup in third is always nice. »

In addition to his winning goal, Chychrun was instrumental in Strome’s net, which began the Capitals’ comeback just 1:20 into the third. Wilson tied the game six minutes later with his second goal of the game.

Nic Dowd was the other scorer for the Caps.

Anders Lee scored a goal and added two assists for the Islanders. Simon Holmstrom scored twice and Bo Horvat had two assists.

The Islanders took their lead by scoring the only three goals of the second. They were the work of Lee, Kyle MacLean and Holmstrom.
