Parliament resumed its work this Friday, November 29, 2024 with the swearing-in ceremony of elected officials, as well as the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. At the end of this session, Ashok Subron, Minister of Social Security and spokesperson for Rezistans ek Alternativ, declared: “It is a historic day in the sense that three deputies from Rezistans ek Alternativ are now sitting in the National Assembly.”
Ashok Subron stressed that this mandate, supported by strong popular legitimacy, will guide their actions over the next five years. He also recalled that the presence of Rezistans ek Alternativ in the National Assembly is the fruit of the struggles led by Mauritians and their ancestors in favor of democracy, in particular for the right to vote, obtained after decades of struggle. Their main objective is to initiate the necessary constitutional reforms. “We are simply representatives of the people, nothing more and nothing less,” he said, while warmly thanking the population.
He also announced that the victory of the Alliance for Change in the legislative elections on November 10 will be celebrated symbolically on Pomponette beach this Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The celebration will take the form of a “bring and share” and a friendly picnic.
For his part, Kugan Parapen, Junior Minister of Social Security, provided details on this event. A picnic concert will be organized on Pomponette beach on Sunday December 1st. The music will begin at 1 p.m., followed by interventions by members of the Change Alliance from 3 p.m. All Mauritians are invited to participate to celebrate the entry of the three “butterflies” of Rezistans ek Alternativ into Parliament.
